Wall-mounted or freestanding pergola: what to choose?
Pergola attached to the façade or freestanding in the garden? Structure, use, budget and installation compared for Luxembourg projects.
9 min readUpdated · 23 July 2026
In Luxembourg, most projects come down to two configurations: a wall-mounted pergola against the house, and a freestanding pergola in the garden or by the pool. The right choice depends on the façade, use and fixings — not only the catalogue photo.
| Criterion | Wall-mounted | Freestanding |
|---|---|---|
| Anchoring | Façade + front posts | Independent posts / foundations |
| Link to house | Extends living / dining | Independent outdoor island |
| Wall waterproofing | Critical detail (flashing, drainage) | Less tied to the façade |
| Terrace shade | Ideal in front of bays | Depends on free placement |
| Structure budget | Often more compact | Often more structure / fixings |
When to choose wall-mounted
- Terrace already attached to the house (meals, outdoor lounge)
- You want to step straight under the pergola from the living room
- The façade can take the fixings (wall type, insulation, joinery)
- You plan vertical blinds or side glazing later
Wall-mounted is the most common choice for Luxembourg villas. Watch the wall detail: water drainage, flashing, and respect for existing openings. A technical visit in Windhof or on site avoids surprises.
When to choose freestanding
- Relaxation space at the back of the garden, spa or poolside
- Façade too constrained (bays, balconies, fragile insulation)
- You want an independent architectural volume (aluminium cube, free structure)
- Better sun / wind orientation away from the house
Questions to decide
- Where do you actually eat / sit today?
- Is the façade sound enough for heavy fixings?
- Need to enclose later (screens / walls)?
- Plant access and foundations possible mid-garden?
- Planning: footprint and distances (see permit guide)?
How we decide on a visit
- 01
Use & circulation
Meals, spa, car access, neighbours — daily life dictates placement.
- 02
Technical support
Wall, slab, slope, services. Wall-mounted = façade study; freestanding = fixings and levels.
- 03
Range & options
Louvres, fabric, cube; LEDs, blinds, glazing. Detailed quote after validating the layout.

Questions fréquentes
Is wall-mounted always cheaper?
Often more compact, but a complex façade (insulation, bays, flashing) can cost as much as a well-anchored freestanding unit. The quote decides.
Can I turn a wall-mounted pergola into a winter garden?
Often yes with walls / screens planned from the study. Mention the evolution in the first quote.
Freestanding near a pool: possible?
Yes, subject to access, fixings and distances. Common on full outdoor projects with CN Solutions.
Do both need a permit?
Depends on municipality and project. Wall-mounted and freestanding can both be concerned — see the Luxembourg pergola authorisation guide.
