Timber or aluminium: the question comes up in almost every carport project in Luxembourg and Arlon. The answer fits in one sentence: timber costs less to buy, aluminium often works out cheaper over ten years once upkeep is counted, and the climate of the Greater Region, with frequent rain, frost and spells of heavy snow, tips the balance towards the latter. Durability: how each material ages
A timber carport is made of Douglas fir, larch, pressure-treated pine or oak, depending on the manufacturer. Well designed, it lasts a long time, but it moves: the wood greys, splits on the surface, takes up moisture at the foot of the posts if they do not sit on metal base plates, and its joints need retightening. A powder-coated aluminium carport does not rust, does not absorb moisture and keeps its dimensions from one season to the next. Its points to watch lie elsewhere: the quality of the coating, the rigidity of the joints and the roof.
Upkeep: what you will actually do each year
- Timber: stain or wood oil to renew, generally every two to three years depending on exposure and product
- Timber: check the fixings, treat splits, watch the foot of the posts and any areas that stay damp
- Timber: clean the roof and gutters, especially under trees
- Aluminium: wash with soapy water once or twice a year to preserve the coating

Snow and wind: what the climate demands
In Luxembourg as around Arlon, a carport must carry wet, heavy snow, then withstand wind catching under the roof. Two points decide how it holds up: the sizing of the beams for the actual span, and the anchoring to the ground. A freestanding carport takes all the loads on its own, through its posts and fixings; a wall-mounted carport transfers part of the load to the wall, which must be sound and load-bearing. In both cases the roof must drain water into a gutter, not against the façade or towards the neighbour.
